Black Farmer - Plateaway

We had the privilege of catching up and speaking to Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, the Founder of The Black Farmer. Here’s what he had to say!

1.) Tell us about your brand?

I started the The Black Farmer brand after fulfilling my childhood dream to purchase a small farm on the Devon/Cornwall border. It was here that my Devon neighbours coined the term ‘The Black Farmer’ and this inspired me to launch my own brand – The Black Farmer. I saw a gap in the market and started producing gluten free sausages. Today we are stocked in the majority of supermarkets and have won many awards for the quality and flavour of our sausages. In October 2020 I then launched The Black Farmer experience, our online farm shop. Offering a range of delicious meats, deli items, drinks, treats, well-being and more. We are a purpose driven brand and strive to deliver products that offer affordable premium. We have just launched delivery to Europe and America, watch this space!

2.) Tell us about your team.

The team are fantastic we are like a little family!  We all work together very closely and constantly talk about food! The team is based all over the world. The majority based in the UK, but also in Portugal and Spain. We are constantly learning from one another. I can’t wait to grow our incredible team even more and around the world.

3.) How did you discover your passion for food?

I have been privileged to have spent most of my career in the food industry and initially started as a chef and then a producer/ director for the BBC. I travelled the world making films about food and drink with the BBC Food & Drink programme and am credited with bringing many of the top celebrity chefs to the small screen including Gordon Ramsay, Antony Worrall-Thompson, Brian Turner and James Martin. I then went on to start a food and drink marketing company in London prior to starting The Black Farmer. 

4.) What’s your favourite item on your shop?

My Don Wilfred Rum…… it’s delicious!

5.) What’s the most popular item on your shop?

Our sausages are always a firm favourite but it has been great to see an increase in demand for our Caribbean and plant based range of products.

6.) What’s your favourite type of food?

I’m a meat and two veg kind of guy, you can’t beat roast pork and plenty of crackling.

7.) What’s your go-to meal?

Chicken with tarragon sauce

8.) Tell us about the creation of your DIY Nationwide bundles?

We noticed there was a demand for more choice than the supermarkets were offering. We wanted to be able to offer a quality, wide range of food and drink products that we could conveniently deliver right to your door. 

We launched our online farm shop in October last year to deliver nationwide, and last week we started international shipping. We continue to grow our product range week on week, all driven by our customers requests.

9.) If you could live off one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It would have to be rice and peas and chicken. This is comfort food for me and reminds me of my childhood.

10.) Tell us about your worst experience in the kitchen!

I once spent hours in the kitchen baking a cake, only to discover I had forgotten about it and left it to burn to a cinder in the oven and filled the kitchen full of smoke!
